34. Tulipa cretica

Finding T. cretica was an adventure. We talked with the locals in Crete and showed them a drawing of this rare tulip that had not been seen by outsiders for decades. In time, we ran into people who said they knew where to find it. After six glasses of a local fire water named raki, they told us to cross a bridge, follow the winding road to the waterfall, turn right and go up the steep slope behind the fence bearing the sign of a black turkey, and there we would find them. And we did! It was at the foot of Mount Ida.
