Tulipa talievii

An early-flowering species that attracts bees and butterflies. By the time other tulips bloom, it already bears beautiful seedpods. The colony shown above was found on the side of a mountain overlooking the Ili River in Kazakhstan at an elevation of 1,000m/3,300ft. May not be the prettiest of wild tulips, but its abundance makes up for that.
