22. Tulipa lehmanniana



The bulbs of this yellow-flowered denizen of Badghiz National Park in southeastern Turkmenistan can burrow down a full 12 inches in the sandy soil. The bulb skins have a hairy lining that probably protects the bulbs from cold and drought. As is the case for many wild tulips, this one has resisted domestication in the Netherlands.
