11. Tulipa kaufmanniana (berkariensis)


The flowers of T. kaufmanniana are generally soft yellow, brushed with red on the outer petals, but variants like the all-red one shown above sometimes occur. Such chance mutations can be the start of new species. One botanist named this tulip T. kaufmanniana coccinea. “Coccinea” is Latin for “scarlet.”
